Skateboarding is a sport that has risen in popularity since its birth on the West coast in the late 1940’s or early 1950’s. The history of the sport is traced back to box derbies where kids in carts would race around near the coast. Who exactly invented skateboards is contested to this day between several different innovators in California. The sport never took off until the 1972 invention of polyurethane wheels. These wheels created a harder more street conducive surface where the individual rider could jump with his board. It was followed a few years later by the staple of the skateboard: the Ollie.
The Ollie reinvented the sport as a no hands aerial. After this invention, the sport became notorious for it complicated tricks and the rise and dominance of vert skating. The 1980s saw the introduction of skateboards into the punk culture and the angst it holds for the government. Magazines such as Thrasher still portray this version of the skater culture through their publications and advertisements of skate shoes and clothes. Although it has mellowed out, the sport still receives a large amount of publicity through the X-Games and other regional and national competitions on the television through ESPN and other networks. Advertisers love these competitions because it is publicity for their skate shoes and skate clothes.
The largest amount of publicity is gathered from individual companies sponsoring riders. These companies will give the athlete gear such as the always coveted skateboards, which professionals use, abuse, and break frequently, along with clothing and skate shoes to wear. By doing this, the boarder is able to show how “cool” the gear is when they wear it while doing hard or difficult tricks. The allure is supposed to transfer from the rider to the skate shoes and skate clothes he or she is wearing. Typically, the public is drawn to these videos by the nature of the content of the videos themselves. Usually, there are some fairly awesome or innovative tricks that make it into the video, as well as some breathtaking stunts or jumps. Also the videos will contain a blooper reel which lets the viewer know the amount of pain and effort the skater put into his or her skateboards in order to make the footage. It also gives some unique perspective into the rider as to her personality beyond the superficial skate shoes and skate clothes they wear.
Publicity for the sport is also derived from the go skateboarding day which is annually on June 21. An arrest went viral a few years back when a cop arrested several boarders for violating a city ordinance, battery, and fleeing from an officer. The office had an internal review conducted on him, but he was not charged with any violations aside from a recommendation that he seek a counseling session that involved not leaving a suspect in chains to pursue another suspect. There are a variety of these skaters vs. police YouTube videos and the section on skater videos will elaborate more on this as well as positive skateboarding videos.
The construction of the boards is fairly simple and that is outlined more on each of the component parts to the right. A simply overview involves the deck, trucks, wheels, kingpin, axel, hanger, and grip tape.
