Skate Deck

The skateboard is a relatively modern invention stemming from bored surfers in California. The modern skate deck is comprised of plywood sheets that are glued together. The sheets are pressed one at a time together with glue until seven or more layers are achieved. The plywood can be from almost any wood since the glue is sufficient to hold the board together. Generally, the board is between 7.5 and 10 inches long, with longer variants being referred to as longboards.

The skate deck is the largest single unit of the skateboard. The underside of the deck is affixed with the trucks and the wheels. They are generally of a normal witness, although older decks can be most easily spotted by their width. The skate deck is covered with grip tape. Grip tape is an adhesive tape that is one side sticky while the other side has a more sandpaper like composition. The tape helps by increasing the friction between the shoe and the top of the skateboard which enables the rider to more easily manipulate the deck with less effort.
