Skateboards FAQs
What kind of skate videos exist?
Generally speaking the majority of skating videos out there are for tricks. Many different companies will hire a skater to become professional and use them to actively work the image of their gear. The pro skater will receive clothes, shoes, and skateboards, but has to perform with them. Typically the same company will hire a film crew or just a photographer to film the exploits of the professional. These videos are abundant, but they are not always the most popular. YouTube is one of the more popular venues for the films to be shown and viewed, because of the low cost of the film. Two of the most popular skating videos on YouTube involve the police getting hot and bothered by young skaters. One of them turned into internal affairs investigations about the abuse of police power. There are other films that don’t portray the depravity of the human condition at times. The film about the skating pitbull Tillman is exceptionally popular to the tune of 10 million views. The video is of a pitbull that rides a skateboard around. Apparently he was featured in an iPhone commercial, although the YouTube does not necessarily denote this. Skate videos are used in professional skateboarding to showcase the gear that different promoters wish to exhibit.
Has the United States every utilized the skateboard?
Yes. In 1999 there was an operation called Urban Warrior which was meant to show how the military could be reactive to the potential vulnerability of urban targets. The exercise involved 1000s of marines and hundreds of navy sailors. It was conducted on the west coast, in California. As an exploratory mission, members of Charlie Company 1st Battalion 5th Marines practiced the feasibility of using skateboards for maneuvering inside buildings to detect tripwires and sniper fire. Although not completely adopted by the marines, there is photographic evidence of a full camouflaged marine holding a skateboard that is ubiquitously cited on the internet. The use of the board, however, has not been fully endorsed and is not actively deploy to combat zones. The use was in a wartime exercise and its publicity does not seem to be catching with the top brass in the Pentagon.
Is there a skateboarding holiday?
Yes. It’s called international go skateboarding day and it was created by the International Association of Skateboard Companies for June 21st. The holiday is practiced around the world, and calls on the general public to skip work and school to go skateboarding for a day. Similar to other hobbyist holidays the appeal is primarily to those who already board. However, unlike some other sports, flash skateboarding mobs sprawl in the urban areas of the United States and other developed or developing countries in order to cruise the city and tout the appeal of the sport as a whole. Cities like New York City have thousands of people gather to go boarding in a manner similar to what one blogger called Critical Mass, which is a midnight ride of bikers meant to show the value of green methods of transportation. Although not commercially capitalized, the events usually are large in and around skateboard shops. Vans Off the Wall van has been seen in New York City during this time and is a focal point of interest for the skating community.
