Skate Videos

The world of skating has its own pop culture that is partially defined by being rebellious and unpopular. However, the distain for government and rules extends as far as their passion for skating anywhere on anything at anytime. The freelance nature of the skater is easily portrayed in the skate videos that are pervasive in inner cities and YouTube.

Skate videos are also used as a marketing device. Professional skaters are recruited by top brands of shoes, clothes, and boards to be seen doing ridiculous tricks in their gear. The gear is tailored to the skater so that the items are emblemized as desirable and indicative of the skaters talent. Looking cool is then transferred from the professional to the product with sufficient marketing.

Skate videos can also show some of the highlights and moments we wish we could forget. For example, a recent YouTube video shows a pitbull named Tillman skating around. Such cuteness landed him a spot on an iPhone commercial. On the other end of the spectrum, because of the rebellious nature of skating and the culture surrounding it, skaters often garner the ire of the local police. Two videos with millions of hits can be seen on YouTube where police abuse their ability to enforce the law by subjecting young skaters to the full potential of the law.
